Do Medical X-Rays Cause Cancer and Heart Disease?

Do you believe that if medical x-rays were a major cause of cancer, this would have been discovered early on, and never allowed to happen? If so, do you have any evidence for such a belief - or is it reflective only of faith in the medical profession?
